Tottenham linked Ebere Eze shows glimpses of his quality to prove Millwall wrong in QPR win

He's attracting attention from Champions League finalists Tottenham and has already caught the eye of England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd after his call-up earlier this month, but this is just business for Queens Park Rangers' most prized asset.

The midfielder, who only turned 21 at the end of June, is enjoying just his third full season at Championship level since his release by Millwall back in 2016.

But since receiving that unwanted call from current Lions boss Neil Harris that he wouldn't be offered a professional contract in SE16 due to not being 'a Millwall type player', Ebere Eze has used that rejection as motivation and in a recent interview with football.london he admitted that making the short move across London to Loftus Road was the best decision of his career.

Eze was unable to add to his three goals and two Championship assists this term as his Rangers side recorded their fourth consecutive league victory, the first time the West Londoners have achieved that feat since January 2014 - when Harry Redknapp was in charge.

Against an aggressive and well-drilled Millwall team, Eze didn't have it all his own way, but the 21-year-old showed plenty of glimpses and certainly enough to convince those interested that he has the potential to become the real deal.

Of the 26 passes Eze attempted in the opening 45 minutes, all but three reached their desired target. One of which was an inch-perfect, eye of a needle through pass into the path of Todd Kane, but Lions goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski got their first - although the offside flag was raised anyway. That was a warning sign for Millwall. Although his former side would hardly have needed one after his goalscoring man of the match performance in QPR's 2-0 victory over the Lions last September.

Eze's next contribution was to receive the ball from deep, busted forward, although his end product proved his Achilles heel on that occasion. The England Under-20 man had teammate Nahki Wells was in an advanced position and had the pass been better, the on-loan Burnley striker would have surely given the R's a half-time advantage.

By the end of the opening period, it was turning into a one-man show. Hard to believe it was actually Eze's first ever senior appearance at The Den after he was an unused substitute for QPR's goalless draw in South Bermondsey last April. Plenty of visiting players crumble on the Lions Den, but Eze was taking everything in his stride.

After the break, Wells did grab his fourth of the campaign with a fine curling effort in the 56th minute to put the R's in touching distance of not only their fourth league victory on the bounce, but their first three points in this part of London since February 1990, when both sides were playing in the top-flight, ending a six match winless run against the Lions away from home.

Millwall briefly restored parity in the 71st minute, but by the time Shaun Hutchinson had finished celebrating his first Championship goal since February and a much-needed equaliser for Harris' men, Wells was accepting the gift handed to him by Bialkowski less than 60 seconds later to put QPR back in front.

With Rangers forced to put in the hard yards in the closing stages - especially after the introductions of both Connor Mahoney and Tom Bradshaw which gave Millwall an extra dynamic, Eze was forced to display his ball-keeping skills and restricted to plenty of defensive work.  The second-half proved to be a frustrating one for the inform man, who did have a few late opportunities to continue his goalscoring run, mostly due to his own work, but fired one on one occasion, whilst the other was blocked by Hutchinson.

Eze will play a lot better this season, but even in second gear, he looks a player that is more than capable of rubbing it against the very best. And one way or another, something will have to go extremely wrong for the midfielder not to find himself playing Premier League football in the near future. Whether that's with his current side, who moved into the top-six, remains to be seen, but the former Millwall midfielder is becoming a star in the making.
