Tottenham legend confirms Mauricio Pochettino's talks with Newcastle United amid £300m takeover

Tottenham legend Ossie Ardiles has confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino returning to the Premier League to join Newcastle United is a 'firm possibility'.

The Argentine was axed by Spurs last year and replaced by Jose Mourinho, with his gardening leave ending this week - freeing him up for a return to England.

Newcastle, on the brink of a £300m takeover, has been touted as a possible destination for the highly-rated 48-year-old and Ardiles, a close friend of Pochettino, has confirmed an offer has been made.

Alasdair Gold's Facebook Live Tottenham Q&A

"Mauricio is fine in England. He is linked with Newcastle United and when he spoke directly to that club there were many first-rate people involved who made him a good offer," he told The Mirror.

"Mauricio had a (contractual) relationship with Tottenham, but last Tuesday his situation was unlocked and he is free to coach.

"In this way, he will hear offers again, but Newcastle is a firm possibility to work again.

"He will take his time to think and wait a little for all this to happen."

Ardiles, who is now an ambassador for Spurs, believes that the Magpies would be landing one of the top-three managers in the world if he moved to Tyneside.

“Mauricio is an absolutely top-level technician. He is one of the three best technicians in the world. He can manage wherever he wants. Here, or in Spain, in France or Italy.

“But he really likes managing in England. There are a few very large teams that can appoint him - and one of them is going to be chosen.”
