Tottenham leave Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld behind as squad fly out for Europa League game

Tottenham left Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld behind on Wednesday as they flew out to Bulgaria for their Europa League play-off.

Jose Mourinho revealed at his pre-match press conference that he was leaving eight senior players at home but still planned on fielding a strong line-up against Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

The identities of the eight were not confirmed by Mourinho, though Standard Sport understands Alli and Alderweireld are staying at Hotspur Way.

A club source insisted Alli's absence was not related to speculation over his future after the England midfielder was linked with Real Madrid as a makeweight into Tottenham's move to re-sign Gareth Bale.

Alli was withdrawn at half-time during Sunday's home loss to Everton, with Mourinho on Wednesday revealing that the player was "was quiet [and] sad" after the game.

“After the game, he was just one of many," Mourinho continued.

“He’s a good boy, very, very polite and I never saw from him a strong reaction. A good boy, a really good boy.”
