Tottenham injury crisis deepens with Steven Bergwijn facing 'extended spell' out

Tottenham have been dealt another major injury blow after confirming that January signing Steven Bergwijn has suffered a "significant sprain" to his ankle.

The Dutch winger, who arrived from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £26.7m, played 90 minutes during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley, but scans have revealed the damage done to his left ankle.

A club statement read: "Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley.

"The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed."

Bergwijn, who scored on his Tottenham debut during their 2-0 win over Manchester City, joins Harry Kane and Heung-min Son on the injury list with both recovering from long-term injuries.

Kane this week returned to work on the training pitch and was working alone with a ball on Monday morning as Jose Mourinho and his remaining squad were preparing for their Champions League trip to RB Leipzig.
