Tottenham injury boost as Harry Winks expects to be fit to start Champions League Final

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is confident of being fit to start the Champions League Final after returning to training with the first team.

Winks has not played since the quarter-final first-leg win over Manchester City on April 4 and he underwent surgery at the end of last month on a persistent groin problem.

Winks joined his team-mates outdoors at the end of last week and he is currently working overtime to ensure he will be fit to face Liverpool in Madrid on June 1.

The midfielder was named in Gareth Southgate's provisional 27-man England squad for the Nations League finals, with the semi-final against the Netherlands just five days after the Champions League final.

Winks watched the second legs against both City and Ajax, when Spurs recovered from 3-0 down on aggregate to win the semi-final on away goals, from home and admitted it was tough.

"It was difficult to watch the second leg against City, I was out and it was tough not to be part of it, especially after playing in the first leg," he said.

"I had my friends around. I couldn’t watch it on my own! I sat there and as much as I was disappointed not to be out there with the team, my focus was on supporting the lads and hoping we’d get through.

"I was working hard on my rehabilitation and I couldn't travel out to Amsterdam. It was just incredible. After Jan hit the crossbar [on 86 minutes] you begin to think ‘is this it?’ but when the third goal went in I was up. Even though I wasn’t there, I felt like I was with them, jumping up and down in my living room.

"It’s a difficult situation, watching on TV from home, one of the toughest times of the season for me because I would have loved to have been out there, but I knew I couldn’t be. The most important thing is that we got through. What a performance!

"We’ve really had to graft and show character and mental strength. It’s an incredibly story for us to get to the final - the way we’ve got there is even better."
