Tottenham in race with Leeds United and Liverpool to sign '£50m' rated Brighton star

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes his old side is in a race with Liverpool and Leeds United to sign Brighton defender Ben White.

Until this season, the 23-year-old had never played a game in the Premier League but has now made 23 appearances since making the step up to the first-team in 2016 from the academy.

Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with the versatile White, who has played at right wing-back, left wing-back, and defensive midfield this term. But according to ex-keeper Robinson, Leeds, Spurs, and the Reds are the most likely suitors this summer.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho gives verdict on Gareth Bale display at Man City

He told Football Insider that a number of clubs will look to sign an "elite" level centre-back.

The report adds Spurs are expected to enter the transfer market for a center-half with Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Joe Rodon, and Toby Alderweireld all failing to cement their place in Jose Mourinho’s side this season.

“A lot of clubs will be looking to sign an elite level centre-back in the summer,” said Robinson.

“I expect Ben White to be in demand from Leeds, Liverpool, and Tottenham at the end of the season.

"You can see how hard that market when you look at Liverpool’s business in January. They waited until the end of the window and they got two players who they probably did not initially want to sign.

“If you are a top-class centre-half in this day and age, you are in high-demand.”

The Seagulls tied White down to a four-year contract until June 2024 in September.

Leeds had three bids of £18.5m, £22m, and £30m rejected in the summer, following his hugely successful spell at Marcelo Bielsa's side in their Championship winning season last term.

But White reportedly turned down three contract offers from Brighton before eventually signing a new deal, according to Sky Sports.

He allegedly turned down a different Brighton contract back in early 2018, so he may be convinced by improved terms at bigger Premier League clubs.

His agent Alex Levack said his client felt a "tinge of disappointment" that a move to Leeds fell through.

If he does go, however, White will not go cheaply as The Sun claimed that Brighton had slapped a £50m price tag on White to fend off any potential suitors.
