So, Atleti did what Atleti do, ceding possession, nabbing a goal and doing various other good bits, all while generally getting it did. Spurs, meanwhile, looked inventive, confident and sharp, though might struggle to compete for the title unless they can find an elite player either from within or without.
Anyway, thanks for your company - bye.
Full-time: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Atletico de Madrid
Plenty to satisfy both sides there.
90+2 min Spurs are doing all they can to get men forwards, but are struggling to find space as Atleti close out yet another one.
90+1 min There shall be three additional minutes; Tom Carrol wallops one wide.
90 min Diedeyou finds space down the left and attacks Walker-Peters, shifting the ball inside to earn a yard and curling a shot just wide of the far post.
88 min Terry Gibson reckons Spurs “deserve” an equaliser. Not sure that’s how it works, but - there’s a handy matrix for measuring precisely this, known as the score. You get what you deserve and deserve what you get.
86 min Atleti win a corner down the right and the ball ends up with Gabi, who turns outside Ball who sells himself in amusing fashion. And the cross which follows is a goodun, Savic up first to head wide.
84 min Edwards looks a talent - eager to run with the ball and, more importantly, seems to play with his head up.
82 min Two quick forward passes through midfield set Edwards running at the Atleti defence, and he takes a touch before squaring to Mason, who attempts to gather and burst into the box. But his touch is heavy, and Godinslides in to block him off.
81 min It’s extremely noticeable that whoever Spurs put on and take off, the sharpness and intelligence in their movement remains.
79 min Nice from Torres, burrowing back into midfield and foxing Ball and Miller before turning Mason beautifully, who fouled him. His rehabilitation has been almost as remarkable as his deterioration.
Updated
77 min Miller, who can play on the wing or behind the striker, has gone to left-back.
77 min Ah, and Dom Ball came on for Harry Winks, who’s had a reasonable game.
75 min Edwards replaces Janssen; McGee replaces Vorm.
75 min Diedeyou comes on for Partey.
74 min Spurs give away another free-kick around the box, this one just to the right of the D, when Carter-Vickers fells Moreno. This time, Saul decides to shoot, curling a left-footer just by the far post.
72 min Atleti have barely been in the Tottenham half this half, but the Caio Henrique finds space down the left and crosses for Moreno to headbutt hard, only for his effort to clatter into Carter-Vickers, just standing around minding his own business.
72 min So, Vincent Janssen looks an accomplished player. I wonder if he might be better with a partner, but his touch and awareness have looked promising.
68 min Oblak, who’s done very well today, scuffs a kick at Carroll who, on the edge of the box, can’t control adequately. But the ball breaks to the charging Chadli, who gathers it and tries a kind of inside-heel reverse-pass to Janssen, waiting on the cusp of offside to break into the space. But the contact is too strong, and the opportunity goes.
67 min Carroll rattles Partey and both are winded, so there’s a brief pause.
66 min Simeone is stalking the touchline is his anorak. It’s really not far off a Lord Anthony, 80s playground heads.
64 min That was an excellent passage from Spurs, with Mason in particular looking lively. Can they keep it up?
62 min Janssen eyes things up, and as Partey leaves the wall, distracted by Son’s break, he whams a low shot into the space they’ve created. And Oblak sees it late, but does well to get the bottom of his hand on it, knocking the ball into the ground and behind. The corner comes to nothing.
61 min Very good spell from Spurs here, and Mason tricks by Torres and gabi - the latter taps his ankle, and that’s a free-kick, edge of the box and just right of centre.
61 min Changes for Spurs: Yedlin, Trippier and Onomah depart, Miller, Walker-Peters and Chadli arrive.
60 min Very nice from Spurs, a long ball finding Janssen pulling right, and he controls well to lay back for Winks, who squares ... and there’s Mason, smashing a shot without breaking stride that Oblak turns behind. The corner comes to nowt.
59 min Double-change for Atleti: Hector and Thiago off, Moreno and Caio Henrique on.
57 min And this is great ball in from Onomah, swinging in from on the left and seeking Janssen. But, obviously, Godin is there to head clear.
57 min This game now looks much as it did at the start of the first half. Spurs are in charge of possession, but Atletico are in shape.
55 min Winks drives through midfield, and though he’s forced to check, he doesn’t look shy of desire or conviction. The problem for him - for various of his mates - for young players all over - is whether they hope for a chance, or go and get some guaranteed football, conscious of the fact that they might never get back.
53 min A weak clip into the wall, is your answer.
52 min But here’s some nice interplay down the left, Onomah into Mason, so Thiago bustles over to run into him. Free-kick, Son behind it looking to curl in, five yards outside the box. “What can the Korean conjure here for Tottenham?”
50 min Spurs have yet to get going in this half - it would not be surprising were they to struggle in the absence of Wanyama.
48 min And this is clever, Gabi driving a pass down the far side of the wall for Thiago. He could shoot, but opts instead to chip towards the far post, the ball drifting behind.
48 min Yedlin is rash in diving in on Torres, and Atleti have a free-kick in a dangerous position: 30 yards out, right of centre, a bit wider than for the goal.
46 min Oh, and Atleti are unchanged.
46 min Changes for Spurs: Mason - who naturally retrieves his captain’s armband - comes on, along with Carroll and Son, while Wanyama, Lamela and Eriksen take a blow.
The boys are back on the baize...
Half-time: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Atletico de Madrid
Spurs started really well, passing with precision and imagination, but slowed down in the final 15 minutes as Atleti began to assert themselves. Presumably, none of this will have the slightest bearing upon what happens next.
45+1 min Versaljko raids down the right and crosses well, but Carter-Vickers is up well, straining sinews to head clear.
45 min There shall be a minimum of one additional minute.
44 min It’s almost time for some substitutions.
42 min And Atleti step it up again from the kick-off, Versaljko sending Hector in, right side of the box. But he can’t catch up with the pass until the angle is narrow, and Winks is in well too to ensure that Vorm isn’t tested.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Atletico de Madrid (Godin, 41)
Gabi flips one towards the further post and Walkes is up, but can only backhead behind him, where arch predator Godin is lurking to poke the opener past Vorm from close range.
Updated
40 min Winks is exceedingly late on Partey, giving Atleti a free-kick 35 yards out and left of centre. What has Gabi got for us?
39 min But this is better, Saul spreading quickly to Filipe on the left, who crosses shin height; Torres can’t quite get there.
38 min Some light pressure from Atleti, specifically, some accurate sideways passes followed by an inaccurate forward one.
36 min While we wait for something to happen, here’s some Littleterry Gibson from a while ago - he’s our co-commentator after all.
35 min This is very quiet now, so Diego Godin does his best to disturb things with some shouting - and well he might, because this has not been impressive from Atletico.
32 min Filipe Luis humps one down the line for Torres and Winks goes with him, beating him for pace and strength before unnecessarily walloping the ball into touch to underline things.
Updated
30 min Yedlin is absolutely platzing to run as fast as he can whenever he’s anywhere near the ball. An endearing trait.
28 min Lamela looks really sharp - I wonder if this might be his season. Yes, I know he was decent last too, but he’s got the talent to be more than a complementary player.
26 min A quiet period, so let’s recall what was easily the highlight of last season
24 min Torres waits for the ball to drop, and as he does so, Carter-Vickers, a teenage shot-putter at national level, barges through him. This is ill-received.
22 min Lovely from Spurs, Onomah nipping a smart ball into Lamela in centrefield who, following a smart one-two with Janssen finds himself in on goal. Under pressure, he does really well to watch the ball onto his laces and it drops and then bounces, and gets a good connection too, but his shot bounces off the inside of the post and away.

19 min Atleti are giving Spurs a lot of space in which to play, but they’re using it nicely. They run hard, obviously, but also make nice angles and come close so that long passes are only used when there’s a man in space.
18 min Who is scarier: Simeone or Wallace?
16 min Yedlin cuts out a pass from Gabi and finds Eriksen, who drives forward and looks for Lamela at inside-left - but the pass is overhit and that’s that.
15 min Vrsaljko stretches down the right and crosses looking for Torres, but Walkes is there first to head clear.
14 min Mauricio Pochettino has mentioned that he’ll be buying more players, but I wonder, what does he need. Looking at Spurs, I see a good squad and a good team, but without elite quality. Where’s he getting that?
12 min Spurs are looking sharp at the moment - if they can stretch the game and get midfielders into the box, Atletico might just have a problem.
Updated
10 min Eriksen’s delivery isn’t all that good, but Saul’s clearing header is week, and the ball drops for Onomah! He does superbly to fetch a volley from behind him, but can’t quite get over it, and sends a stormer absolutely crashing into the bar and out.
10 min Yedlin switches on the gas and burns by Vrsaljko, who recovers well, sliding in to concede a corner.
7 min Nice hold-up play from Janssen allows him to feed possession back to Eriksen, and he drives low - but not especially hard - only for the ball to kick up and force Oblak to concede a corner, which comes to nowt. Somewhere, Ian Walker smiles ruefully.
6 min Atleti win a corner down the right, swung out towards the back post by Gabi. And Godin is up early and hard, nodding across for Savic, whose header at goal is deflected behind. And from the second effort, Gani’s delivery is equally good, picking out Torrest at the near post - and he’s lost his man, too, but can’t keep his effort down. That was a good chance.
5 min Spurs are passing the ball nicely in midfield, Wanyama putting himself about, but Janssen’s going to need a lot of help to mither this Atletico defence.
3 min Nice move down the right from Spurs, moving the ball sharply to Trippier, who crosses - and Janssen is there, trying to flip it around the corner to himself, but with a slightly heavy touch.
3 min Diego Simeone is clad in a fetching black, teamed with black anorak. Needs a tin of Monster to complete the look.
1 min And immediately, an Atleti foul, Partey in high on Trippier and studding the top of his foot. He stays down.
1 min And off we go.
45 degree handshakes pass down the line and team photos are taken because, well, because because because because because.
What is it about friendlies and late starts? I despair.
Right then, the players are coming out at the G.
Perfectly normal behaviour.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey looks like he might be a player.
Let’s enjoy some Vincent Janssen.
“International Champions Cup”, though. Let’s not be unkind.
On Sky, Thierry Henry is talking us through Euro 2000, and it’s actually pretty good. It’s always nice when an elite player’s love of the game is so apparent - Rio Ferdinand does this really well, too - and it’d be good to get more of it from both.

Have these teams ever played before? Anyone know what happened if so?
Teams
Tottenham Hotspur (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Trippier, Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin; Wanyama, Winks; Lamela, Eriksen, Onomah; Janssen.
Subs: McGee, Glover, Walker-Peters, Ball, Carroll, Mason, Amos, Miller, Edwards, Son, Chadli, Harrison.
Atlético de Madrid (4-4-2): Oblak; Vrsaljko, Godín, Savic, Filipe; Gabi, Thomas, Tiago, Saúl; Héctor y Torres.
Preamble
Yes, it’s only a friendly, but this is still a game between two of Europe’s most interesting sides, and one it’d be an absolute delight to behold once the serious business gets underway. But today is actually a bit important for Spurs, who, after an excellent run ended the season in more traditional fashion, whose best players endured a dispiriting Euros, and did not look too clever against Juventus earlier in the week.
Kick-off from the MCG is at 11am BST, 8pm in Melbourne.
