Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust deliver verdict on ending 2019/20 season behind closed doors

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust has revealed that it does not believe the 2019/20 campaign should resume in England behind closed doors.

The Trust has made the admission as speculation continues to rumble on about what the future of the campaign may hold, with the coronavirus pandemic having brought the campaign to a halt since early March.

Both the Premier League and the EFL are eager for the campaign to resume as soon as it is safe to do so, but only with matches being staged behind closed doors - a move that, at present, will be the only option.

However, the Trust has issued their viewpoint on the prospect of matches being staged in empty stadiums, insisting that if it is not safe for supporters to attend matches then games should not be played at all in any capacity.

"We don’t share the view that some in football seem to hold that it is possible to create a bubble in which the several hundred people needed to stage a match could exist free of any danger of catching COVID-19," the Trust said on the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust website.

"Our current view is that if it is not safe to stage a game with fans, it is not safe to stage a game full stop.

In line with fan organisations throughout Europe, we also question whether it would be right for football to create demand for resources that are needed more urgently elsewhere – especially the testing and tracing that are needed to successfully deal with COVID-19.

"The argument against playing behind closed doors is put very eloquently here in relation to the situation in Germany.

"However, with circumstances changing very fast and clubs facing unprecedented pressures, it would be foolish to rule any solution out. Staging games behind closed doors is very much a last resort, and any solution should be discussed properly with fan representatives."

Currently, it is not known when Premier League football will return, despite the league's bosses having hopes of concluding the campaign when it is deemed safe to do so.
