Tottenham Hotspur's disciplinary action sets COVID precedent following Leeds United clash

Tottenham have issued fines to Giovani Lo Celso, Erik Lamela and Sergio Reguilon after pictures shared on social media showed the trio breaching COVID restrictions.

The three players were photographed gathering over the Christmas and New Year period, alongside West Ham's Manuel Lanzini, which was a clear violation on the government's guidelines that banned households in Tier 4 from mixing.

Discovery of the breach occurred ahead of Spurs' meeting with Leeds United in north London, where Jose Mourinho's side emerged as 3-0 victors, and punishment has now been issued.

The Athletic reports that the Spurs hierarchy were furious at the breach and reminded the players of their responsibilities, as well as issuing the trio with a fine.

“We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image... we regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example,” a Spurs spokesperson said on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police were also made aware of the breach and spoke to both Spurs and West Ham, with a spokesperson adding: "We remind all Londoners that it is up to all of us to make the right choices in order to slow the spread of the virus."

This is not the first time that the clubs have had to deal with such an incident, with Premier League players courting headlines in the past year for breaching regulations ever since the first lockdown was imposed in March.

Until now, however, clubs have largely just issued statements condemning the behaviour and there has not been details of significant internal action being taken.

Spurs, therefore, have set a precedent with their response to the latest breach, which has come at a time when coronavirus cases are on the rise again and a third national lockdown has been imposed.
