Tottenham hit by defender injury doubt for Leeds United clash

Tottenham Hotspur could be without their starting centre-back ahead of their clash with Leeds after Cristian Romero picked up an injury.

The 23-year-old Argentina international has played for the full 90 minutes in Spurs’ past six matches, including under new boss Antonio Conte.

This week he was playing for his country in a 0-0 World Cup qualifier with Brazil, helping his side make it through to Qatar 2022, but not without a cost: he limped off with an injury.

Romero made it through 53 minutes before he ended up down on the turf clutching his leg as he waited for treatment. He ended up being subbed off.

Now there is concern in Spurs circles that he might not make it back in time for Leeds United ’s visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Sunday’s Premier League fixture.

There are options for Conte though, with Colombian Davinson Sanchez a ready-made starter, having played at the beginning of the season. He will probably be the first-choice swap-in with something to prove.

Other options include Wales international Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga, a young defender looking to make his mark and start knocking on Gareth Southgate’s door.

Spurs currently sit ninth in the table, and with the arrival of their superstar new coach there is expectation among fans that they will challenge for European qualification.

Leeds on the other hand sit in 15th after a bad start to the season, but with two wins under their belt and key players returning from injury there is hope that Leeds will climb the table too.
