Tottenham: Heung-min Son urges team-mates to step up in his absence... just as he did when Harry Kane left

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son has urged his team-mates to feel the responsibility to "step up" while he is away at the Asian Cup, just as he did whenever Harry Kane was injured.

Son scored his 12th League goal of the season as Spurs moved to within a point of fourth-placed Arsenal with a scrappy but hard-fought 3-1 win over Bournemouth on New Year's Eve.

The forward is now set to miss up to six weeks of the season at the Asian Cup in Qatar with South Korea, ruling him out of Friday's FA Cup third-round at home to Burnley, the visit to Manchester United on January 14 and potentially further games against Brentford, Everton and Brighton.

Son often raised his game when Kane, who left Spurs for Bayern Munich in the summer, was absent - notably during Spurs' run to the 2019 Champions League Final - and he hopes the likes of Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson will do the same while he is away.

Son said: "I hope so more than anything, they are my family and my team-mates. I hope they can score as many goals as possible.

"I feel [it's] like when Harry was here and he was missing some games with injuries. I felt like I needed to step up in previous years, I hope our players have this kind of feeling that they need to step up.

"In this situation, you grow as a player and a human being. Richy is doing a fantastic job, I hope he is hungry for more goals, also Deki [Kulusevski] and Brennan.

"I hope everybody who is playing attacking positions can score as many goals as possible and bring us to a better position. I wish it more than anything else."

The win over Bournemouth moved Spurs to within three points of table-topping Liverpool, although Jurgen Klopp's side can stretch their lead when they host Newcastle on Monday.

Ange Postecoglou, the Spurs head coach, has acknowledged that his side are part of a five-team title race but Son is more cautious about their prospects.

"Everybody is very close in the title race but we don't really want to talk about it because there are still 20 games to play and we're still missing many important players," he said.

"We're going to focus on ourselves and game by game give everything. We try not to focus on any other teams, approach it looking for better football and better mentality and then we'll see what happens at the end of the season.

"There has been a lot of change [at the club], 100 per cent," he added. "But everybody is taking a big responsibility.

"It is a big credit when compared to the last couple of years. Those lads are working really hard, we are not talking about where we are now or how many points we have.

"That is a good sign. We are just focused game by game, just want to win every single game.

"We also have made some mistakes and you learn that you can't win 38 games in the Premier League because it is so tough. Focus on ourselves, not look at the table and just see what happens."
