Tottenham have secret weapon in defender transfer talks after retained list decision confirmed

It is sure to be a busy summer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Ange Postecoglou gets his feet under the table. The Australian will be looking to bring new players into the squad to make his mark.

Spurs finished last season in eighth place in the Premier League, missing out on European football altogether. And while it will take time for Postecoglou's methods to get across to his new players, they will be hoping to improve on that finish in 2023/24.

It is set to be a summer of change in N17, with a number of players looking set to exit the club, while Postecoglou will be keen to bring new players in too.

One of those who could be on the way out is Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentinian has struggled to settle in north London since a £27.2million move from Real Betis in 2020.

He spent last season back in La Liga, on loan with Villarreal, where he managed two goals in 22 league games. He will return to Hotspur Way this summer, with a point to prove to a new boss and his future up in the air.

Tottenham are likely to entertain offers for the 27-year-old and he could in fact turn out to be something of a secret weapon in Spurs transfer talks for another player.

According to reports, Barcelona manager Xavi is an admirer of Lo Celso and the Catalan club could make a move for him during the transfer window.

One player already going that way currently is Clement Lenglet, following the end of his loan spell at Tottenham. Spurs are interested in bringing the Frenchman back to north London permanently after a solid season in the Premier League and they could look to secure a player-plus-cash deal that would see Lo Celso go in the other direction.
