Tottenham have found their new free-kick taker after what happened during international duty

Tottenham may have finally found their Christian Eriksen replacement in Son Heung-min.

Son enjoyed an extremely productive 2021/22 campaign, netting 23 Premier League goals - a record that reads even more impressive when you factor in that none of those came from the penalty spot. Still, the South Korean has been showcasing that he is more than capable from set-pieces during the ongoing international break.

The former Bayer Leverkusen attacker has scored free-kicks in back-to-back games against Chile and Paraguay, staking his claim to become Spurs' primary free-kick taker ahead of the likes of defender Eric Dier and striker Harry Kane. Kane scored his first-ever direct free-kick in the Premier League against Aston Villa back in 2014 but has since struggled from set-pieces, failing to find the back of the net from his next 53 attempts in the league, as per Opta, via fannation.

Danish playmaker Eriksen had previously been a brilliant free-kick taker for the Lillywhites but the talented midfielder left for Inter Milan in January 2020 and the north Londoners have struggled to convert from direct set-pieces since. Son did net a free-kick during last season's 1-0 win against Watford and former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara has claimed that the clinical frontman is the most underrated player in Premier League history following his surprise omission from the PFA Team of the season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, O'Hara said: “How Son has not got into the player of the year is remarkable to me. I don’t know who picked that. They should have a good look at themselves.

"He was top goalscorer, level with Salah, and no penalties and to not even be considered for player of the year is incredible. Not even that, what he brings to the team.

"Goals, of course, but his energy, his assists, the way he plays the game with a smile on his face. For me, he’s the most underrated player in Premier League history. He could play for any team in the world.”
