Tottenham handed Thomas Strakosha transfer blow as Lazio make decision on his future

Tottenham target Thomas Strakosha is close to signing a new deal at Lazio, according to reports in Italy.

The goalkeeper has been attracting interest from the Premier League, with Tottenham said to have targeted him as a potential successor to club captain Hugo Lloris.

However, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Albanian is close to agreeing a new deal with his current club in what would be a blow to his suitors.

The player has come up through the ranks at the Italian club and looks set to extend his stay in Serie A by signing a deal that will see his wages doubled.

Tim Sherwood claims he will be a difficult act to follow

Strakosha has been a major factor behind Lazio’s unlikely title challenge this season, with the club having the best defensive record in the Italian top-flight.

His form has attracted reported interest from Tottenham and Premier League rivals Leicester City but it now looks as though both clubs will have to end their pursuit of the goalkeeper.

Speaking earlier in the season Strakosha himself admitted that despite having an impressive season there are still things he can improve on.

“I can improve on everything until the day I stop,” he said.

"Buffon, who’s 42, still says so, let alone me. It’s enough for me to be focused and improve day by day.”

Tottenham are said to be on the lookout for a long-term replacement for club captain Hugo Lloris, who missed a part of this season due to a dislocated elbow.

Reports suggest that Jose Mourinho could now turn to Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana who will cost in the region of £35 million.
