Tottenham handed Matt Doherty injury blow as player ruled out of Republic of Ireland friendly

Matt Doherty has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad due to injury.

Playing the full 90 minutes for his country last Wednesday as they lost 3-2 away at Serbia in their World Cup qualifying group, the 29-year-old was once again involved on Saturday in the embarrassing 1-0 defeat at home to Luxembourg.

However, the Tottenham man only played the first half of the contest as he was substituted off at half-time with an injury.

Now set to take on Qatar in a friendly in Debrecen, Hungary on Tuesday evening, it has been confirmed that Doherty and Sheffield United's Enda Stevens have not travelled with their teammates for the game.

Tottenham Talk: Mourinho's Position, Young Stars And Transfers

The FAI official website confirmed the news on Monday morning but they did not specify what type of injuries both had sustained.

The ex-Wolves player will be hoping he is back to action as soon as possible as he bids to force his way into Jose Mourinho's plans for the rest of the season.

In and out of the XI since the campaign got underway in September, Japhet Tanganga got the nod at right-back against Aston Villa in their last Premier League game and he may remain there for Sunday's trip to Newcastle United.

Serge Aurier was missing in the Midlands due to illness, with Doherty not even named in the matchday 20 as Mourinho instead decided to include academy players Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine on the bench.

Following Sunday's visit to the north east, Spurs will only have eight league games and the Carabao Cup final to come before the season draws to a close after their embarrassing Europa League exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

A further update on Doherty is likely to come when Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny speaks to the press to preview the Qatar match.
