Tottenham handed transfer boost as Cristian Romero set to make key Atalanta decision

Tottenham target Cristian Romero has reportedly described his proposed move to Spurs as an 'opportunity he can't miss' as he plans to tell the Atalanta hierarchy and manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, that he wants to join Spurs.

The Argentine centre-half, who was formally recognised as 2020/21 Serie A's best defender, sees a move to north London as his priority, however the Italian club are yet to formally accept Tottenham's bid said Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

Romano on Twitter also claims that Atalanta are looking for a guaranteed fee of around €50 million (£43m) from Fabio Paratici as Spurs continue to chase the 23-year-old's signature.

Should the defender seal a move to Spurs he will be joining forces with former Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini, who Tottenham signed this summer on an initial season-long loan.

Romero, who was instrumental in Argentina's 2021 Copa America glory this summer, had reported interest from Barcelona, however Romano has since dismissed such claims handing Spurs a huge boost.

Paratici appears to be on the brink of wrapping up the club's third signing of the summer following Bryan Gil's £22.5 million arrival from Sevilla and Gollini on loan, also from Atalanta.

Romero, who operated in the middle of a back three at Atalanta, will arrive in north London with valuable Champions League and positional experience in a bid to hit the ground running.

However, despite Romero's experience in a similar shape that was infamously rolled out by Espirito Santo at Wolves, Daniel Levy has expressed his desire for Spurs to reignite their attacking DNA, hinting a back three will not be in operation but instead a four.

Speaking to the Tottenham website, he said: "I’ve spoken already about the need to revert back to our core DNA of playing attacking, entertaining football and Fabio and I believe Nuno is the man who can take our talented group of players, embrace our young players coming through and build something special.”

With a newly imposed attacking mindset being reinstated across the club, Romero, who directly contributed to eight goals across 42 games in all competitions last season, has stressed the importance being able to attack as well as defend.

Speaking ahead of Atalanta's clash in the Champions League in February 2021, the defender spoke on how Gasperini encouraged him to attack more before addressing how his boss helped him improve his game.

Romero said: "With Gasperini, anyone must be able to do more things. A defender can’t just defend, he must contribute going forward.

"He is a coach who can help you grow as a player and he can improve your style of play and many other aspects."
