Tottenham given green light to return for Paulo Dybala in January transfer window

Tottenham tried and failed to sign Paulo Dybala from Juventus in the summer.

Spurs were locked in negotiations for weeks, trying to secure a deal for the 25-year-old Argentinian, that would have been a real statement of intent heading into the new season.

Reports suggested that a £64.4million deal was agreed between the two clubs, and there were further reports that Spurs had agreed personal terms with the player too.

So why did a deal not get over the line?

Because of problems with third party ownership of the player's image rights.

Tottenham could not come to an agreement over the terms of the player's image rights and he remained in Italy.

With the European transfer window open until September 2, Dybala was free to move to another club on the continent and he has had plenty of admirers.

But the striker looks set to stay in Turin, at least for the first half of the season, giving Spurs the green light to go back in for him in the January transfer window.

Dybala attracted interest from Inter Milan, with a swap deal with unsettled Mauro Icardi mooted, while he was also tipped to be a makeweight in a Juve move for PSG star Neymar.

Neither happened and Dybala remains a Juventus player, with a move on Sunday or Monday unlikely.

Juventus sport director Fabio Paratici is quoted as saying: "I’m convinced Paulo Dybala will stay at Juve. The decision has been made."

That gives Spurs four months to try and iron out image rights details with Dybala and his entourage to get a deal done in January.
