Tottenham follow in Liverpool's footsteps by reversing decision to furlough non-playing staff

Tottenham Hotspur have followed in the footsteps of Liverpool and reversed their decision to place non-playing staff on furlough leave.

The North London club were the second Premier League side, after Newcastle United, to confirm they would be placing 550 non-playing employees on the government relief scheme.

Spurs have received plenty of criticism from those within the game over the move, especially given just last month they announced profits of £68.6million.

But, and just like Liverpool did last week, Spurs have now reversed their decision and announced that all staff, whether full-time, casual, or furloughed, will be paid 100 percent of their wages for April and May.

"The criticism the club has received over the last week has been felt all the more keenly because of our track record of good works and our huge sense of responsibility to care for those that rely on us, particularly locally,” club chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement.

“It was never our intent, as custodians, to do anything other than put measures in place to protect jobs whilst the Club sought to continue to operate in a self-sufficient manner during uncertain times.

“We regret any concern caused during an anxious time and hope the work our supporters will see us doing in the coming weeks, as our stadium takes on a whole new purpose, will make them proud of their club.”

Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group reversed their controversial decision to furlough their non-playing staff last Monday after a fierce backlash from supporters and former players.

The Anfield club also apologised to its supporters for coming to the "wrong conclusion" in an open letter penned by CEO Peter Moore.
