Tottenham favourite urges Jose Mourinho to save Gareth Bale from Real Madrid nightmare

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has urged Jose Mourinho to make a swoop to bring Gareth Bale back to the Premier League from Real Madrid.

The Wales superstar has endured a difficult season in the Spanish capital, facing regular criticism from the media and the supporters.

As a result, his future has attracted regular speculation and a move to China was muted during the summer, as well as consistent links suggesting a return to English football could be on the cards.

With the January transfer window now right around the corner, speculation on Bale is likely to emerge once again and Berbatov believes that Spurs should bring the fan-favourite back to North London.

“Gareth Bale has said he thinks Jose Mourinho is a good fit for Tottenham so it seems possible that the Portuguese could try to sign the Welshman in January. That would be a great move for both parties,” he told Betfair.

“I'm a big admirer of Bale, it's not working out for him in Madrid and, if he comes back to England, Spurs would probably be the ideal club for him.

“He understands the club and was a great player for them before he left for Spain. I would be very pleased to see him back at Spurs.”

The chances of Bale leaving the Santiago Bernabeu have been ramped up following comments from his agent Jonathan Barnett, who admitted he is 'not ecstatic' at the club.

"He has never asked to leave. He has a contract with Real Madrid and as long as they want him, there's not much anyone can do about it," he tol the Euro Leagues Podcast.

"There's no guarantee he is leaving. If the right opportunity came along for him and it's something he wants to do we have to have a chat with the president of Real Madrid and see where we are."
