Tottenham fans will love what Jose Mourinho has said about Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso

Tottenham Hotspur are safely through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 2-1 victory in the third round replay against Championship side Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

First-half goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela gave Spurs a comfortable lead at half-time, although an 83rd minute Geroge Saville strike made it a nervy last seven minutes for Jose Mourinho's side as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

That goal didn't come, and Tottenham will now face Southampton in the next stage of the competition.

The two goalscorers for Tottenham earned good reviews for their performance during the match, earning comparisons with two other Argentinians who have history with Spurs.

Talking in his post-match press conference, Mourinho was full of praise for the duo.

"Do you want me to call them Ardiles and Villa? No. They played very well. Ardiles and Villa would not be ashamed of them for sure," he said.

"They played very well. The team played very well especially in the first half.

"The second half we started ok but then gave some sloppy reactions to let them feel their way back into the game. Jonathan [Woodgate] was not sleeping, he was awake, he was reading the game. He brought on Gestede alongside Fletcher and they started playing long balls, second balls.

"They scored the goal and we had to defend. But the majority of the game our energy was there. We should have scored more goals and killed the cup tie.

Both players have had injury setbacks this season, and Mourinho said that the performance of both players is a sign that they are getting up to full match fitness.

"But I am happy with Lamela and Gio. Lamela was out for so long, he has been coming back step by step. Playing 20 minutes here, half an hour against Liverpool and 90 here. You could see his fitness is coming," he added.

"And Gio again has been step by step. He was so so good against Liverpool and so so good here again. I am happy with the boys. They played with intensity. And I am happy with result obviously."
