Tottenham fans will love what Dimitar Berbatov has said about Spurs in the Champions League

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov has backed his old club to go far in the Champions League if they show the right attitude under Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese has lifted the biggest prize in European club football twice, first with Porto and then with Inter as part of the first-ever major treble in Italian football in 2010.

He beat Barcelona on the way to a final that saw him defeat his old mentor Louis van Gaal to overcome Bayern Munich inside their own stadium.

Berbatov reached two Champions League finals of his own in 2009 and 2011 with Manchester United only to suffer defeat to Barcelona in both years.

He wants to see Spurs recapture the mentality of last season when they went all the way to the final under Mauricio Pochettino, especially given their draw for the knockout stages.

In the round of 16, Tottenham will take on Bundesliga side RB Leipzig home and away and according to their ex-striker it should be the perfect start for another campaign that leads deep into the final rounds of the competition.

"I would like Spurs to show the same battling spirit in the Champions League like they did last year," he told Bet Fair.

"They have a good draw coming up, Leipzig, who aren't an easy team to face but at least it's not Barcelona, Man City or Liverpool, so I want to see them do well.

"In the end, when it comes to picking a team who can go all the way in this year's competition, Juventus with [Cristiano] Ronaldo flying high, Liverpool to defend the crown are great teams, but no doubt everyone will be watching how Man City do against Real Madrid.

"Unfortunately, one of them will go home after that tie and we will be left without one of the biggest clubs in the world."

When it comes to the Premier League, however, Berbatov believes that Liverpool will not be caught.

"Going into the second half of the season it will be a miracle if anyone stops Liverpool," he said. "For me it won't happen and it's their year.

"They are so far ahead in points, in the way they play football and this season I can't see anyone catching them.

"If someone does catch them, then it will be the stupidest thing that will ever happens and it will only be Liverpool's fault and no one else."
