Tottenham fans will love the reason Steven Bergwijn will wear the number 23 shirt at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur's newest signing Steven Bergwijn has big plans for his time in north London.

Spurs have completed their move to sign Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven, with the Dutch international joining on a five-year deal after signing a contract with the north London side until 2025.

Tottenham confirmed the deal this morning, after reportedly agreeing a fee of £25.6m plus add-ons for the 22-year-old, who is seen as a Christian Eriksen replacement, after the Denmark international joined Inter Milan yesterday.

And Tottenham's decision to give Bergwijn the number 23 shirt previously worn by Eriksen has caused a stir among some fans.

But while some fans have a theory over why the Dutchman will be wearing the number 23, football.london understands there is a different reason behind Bergwijn's shirt choice.

As highlighted by Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold on social media, that is that it is not about taking Eriksen's shirt, but instead that he wanted the number due to the iconic nature of some sportsmen to have worn the shirt in professional sport.

That includes the likes of basketball stars LeBron James and Michael Jordan, and former England captain David Beckham, who wore the shirt during his time at Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.

It highlights, as our Spurs correspondent said on Twitter, that Bergwijn has big plans at Tottenham.
