Tottenham Hotspur fans have immediately taken to summer signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The Danish midfielder signed a five-year contract with Spurs in August after joining from Southampton in a £15million move and he has hit the ground running at the club.
He has become one of the first names on the team sheet under Jose Mourinho, providing a steel to the midfield and helping Spurs reach top spot in the Premier League table after nine games.
Hojbjerg was one of many Spurs players to impress during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City, making the most passes of any home player while simultaneously shutting down City’s creative players.
His midfield display alongside Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele allowed Tottenham to soak up pressure and hit Pep Guardiola’s side on the counter-attack and win through goals from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso.
And it wasn’t just his performance on the pitch which had fans purring. The eagle-eyed among them spotted an aspect of Hojbjerg’s body language which underlines his importance to his new side. When Hojbjerg walked out on the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday he looked to the sky before clenching both firsts in celebration.
Spurs fans on Reddit took that as confirmation of the Dane’s winning mentality, saying: “PEH already knew we would win when he stepped on to the pitch.”
Hojbjerg was Southampton captain before his move to north London and his leadership abilities have been another important asset to Spurs, who are captained by Hugo Lloris, but also have Harry Kane as an inspirational presence on the field.
Tottenham face Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday next, before they will look to hold onto first place in the Premier League by beating rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
