Tottenham face Steven Bergwijn injury blow ahead of RB Leipzig Champions League tie

Tottenham are set to be without winger Steven Bergwijn for their Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

Spurs trail the Bundesliga side 1-0 from the first leg of the last-16 tie, and had hoped to include Bergwijn in their squad for the return match against Leipzig.

But the Dutchman was absent from Tottenham's final training session on Monday afternoon and looks likely to be omitted from the squad travelling to Germany.

Bergwijn limped off the pitch at the end of Spurs' 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday and was assessed over the weekend, but it appears the 22-year-old will not be risked at the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday night.

Speaking after the game at Turf Moor, Jose Mourinho admitted that he had wanted to rest Bergwijn early, but Burnley's first half lead changed his plans.

"Yeah. The plan was for Steven to play 55-60 minutes and then Lucas to come," he to reporters.

"The plan was to keep the fresh players on the pitch for 90 minutes, but I had to change that at half-time immediately. Steven had to play for 90 minutes, so on top of that he’s injured.

"Let’s see if it’s something minor and if he can make the effort because Tuesday I only want two options: we win or we lose but we leave everything there.

"We go with everything. The group is very strong and the group is very united.

"We go with everything. Tired not tired, injured not injured. We go there Tuesday with everything."

Elsewhere, it has been confirmed that fans will be able to attend the clash against Leipzig, despite the widespread concerns about the spread of Coronavirus.

There were fears that the game would have to be played behind closed doors to help contain the outbreak of the virus.

But a spokesman from the office of Mayor Burkhard Jung has confirmed that the game will go ahead as normal, with supporters able to watch in the stadium.
