Tottenham have been referred to the UEFA disciplinary committee after their match with Rennes could not be played.
The English Premier League side were due to play their final Conference League match on Thursday but the fixture had to be postponed.
However, a Covid outbreak in Antonio Conte 's squad meant that the fixture could not go ahead and given a hectic domestic schedule over the winter there is no space to reschedule.
UEFA rules state that all group stage matches must be completed by December 31, something that will prove impossible with Tottenham also needing to accommodate postponed Premier League games.
The governing body has had no choice but to refer the matter to the disciplinary commission, which could award the French side a walkover if Spurs are deemed to be "responsible for a match not taking place".
A UEFA statement announced: "Following a COVID-19 outbreak in the team of Tottenham Hotspur FC ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage match against Stade Rennais FC, scheduled to take place on 9 December 2021 in London, the match could not take place.
"In accordance with Annex J of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations, UEFA, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.
"Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found. As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations.”
With Tottenham currently third in their group it's likely they will be eliminated from the competition.
There would appear to be no chance of UEFA awarding them a forfeit and even if the match is declared void they'd finish three points below Vitesse.
