Tottenham eyeing summer transfer move for Southampton defender Jannick Vestergaard

Jose Mourinho is considering a move for Southampton defender Jannick Vestergaard.

The Tottenham boss has made the signing of a new central defender one of his top priorities this summer and the Dane features high up on his list of targets.

Vestergaard can operate either side of the two at the back and has enjoyed a decent season despite the Saints’ troubles.

Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl badly missed him around the turn of the year when he was out through injury.

Vestergaard is entering the final year of his contract at St Mary’s and Spurs’s belief is that they could land themselves another bargain from the south-coast club with such little time left to run.

Last year, they signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the Saints and have been very impressed with everything he has brought to the club.

Mourinho started the season with Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier in central defence but in recent weeks Dier has fallen out of favour in the Premier League with Davinson Sanchez preferred.

The Portuguese wants more surety at the back and believes 28-year-old Vestergaard could bring him that.

Vestergaard, who has been capped 19 times by Denmark, joined Southampton from Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2018.

The defender, whose mother is German, started his career at Hoffenheim before joining Werder Bremen and then Moenchengladbach in 2016.
