Tottenham eye Barcelona defender amid major Jose Mourinho future update

Here are your Tottenham morning headlines for Sunday, April 18.

Spurs eye Emerson

Tottenham are said to be interested in Barcelona defender Emerson ahead of this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The full-back is currently with Real Betis, who he joined on a two-year loan in 2019 after joining from Atletico Mineiro on a strange double transfer agreement.

Both Barcelona and Betis are reported to have rights in the player, but it is Barca who would have the final say over his future and Spurs are reportedly eyeing a move, something the Catalan giants could be open to with plenty of options at full-back.

Emerson, a right-back, has made 30 appearances across all competitions for Real Betis this season, and valued at £22.5million, he could be an option with Matt Doherty receiving criticism since his move from Wolves.

Mourinho future update

There is a growing belief within Tottenham Hotspur that Jose Mourinho will not be at the club next season, football.london understands.

Tottenham have had a rotten time in 2021 and look set to miss out on Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season, having previously played in the competition for four campaigns in a row.

With six games left, Mourinho's side are five points off fourth-placed West Ham who had their own problems at Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, but Chelsea and Liverpool also sit above Spurs with a game in hand and the initiative, while Everton could still overtake the north London club with their own game in hand.

Tottenham's slide has been dramatic since the 3-1 defeat at home to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on January 28.

Mourinho's side have lost seven of their 14 Premier League games since that day, winning just five matches and drawing two, conceding 21 goals, just one less than they have scored.

Guardiola's De Bruyne update

Pep Guardiola has offered an update on the injury sustained by Kevin De Bruyne ahead of next weekend's Carabao Cup final.

De Bruyne limped off three minutes into the second half of Manchester City's FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Saturday evening, and his absence proved costly.

Chelsea went on to take the lead through Hakim Ziyech and they held on for victory, advancing to the FA Cup final at the expense of City, who have now lost the opportunity of winning the quadruple.

But the treble is still on and Man City will be desperate to get De Bruyne back ahead of their Carabao Cup final with Tottenham on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

De Bruyne appeared to suffer an ankle injury, and after the game, Guardiola offered an update of sorts, saying: "I don't know - he has pain.

"Tomorrow we're going to make a test with the doctors but it doesn't look good. We will see tomorrow."
