Tottenham evening headlines as striker lifts lid on Spurs bid and big Daniel Levy claim made

Here are your Tottenham evening headlines for Tuesday, March 9.

Spurs made offer for Piatek

Krzysztof Piatek has revealed that Tottenham tried to sign him last year as cover for the injured Harry Kane.

Kane suffered a thigh injury in January 2020, which kept him out of action for 14 games, prompting Spurs to scour the market in the January transfer window for a striker.

Tottenham eventually landed winger Steven Bergwijn in a £27million deal from PSV Eindhoven, but Piatek says the club were keen on him before he eventually sealed a move from AC Milan to Hertha Berlin.

JOSE MOURINHO PLACES TOTTENHAM'S HARRY KANE AMONG WORLD'S BEST STRIKERS

“I don’t know if I can talk about it, but Milan must have received an offer from Tottenham to loan me for 1.5 years,” the Polish striker told Prawda Futbolu, as reported by Sport Witness.

“That was when Harry Kane was injured and I was supposed to replace him for the first three months. However, Hertha were more specific.

“They immediately spent a lot of money, offered a definitive transfer and a 4.5-year contract. Everything was in order. Their determination was enormous, it convinced me."

Lucas explains change in mentality

Lucas Moura says a change in Tottenham’s mentality is behind their recent upturn in form.

Spurs have won their last three Premier League matches to stay in contention for the top four after a run of five defeats in six league games across January and February.

Lucas’ own form has mirrored that of the team’s, with the Brazilian enjoying the move to play number 10 behind Kane.

"I think the main thing was the mentality because we just needed to have the belief in ourselves," he said.

"We needed to know how good we are because we have terrific players, a very good squad and the quality in the Premier League to win games.

"When we realise that and we have confidence we are able to dominate games."

Redknapp defends Levy’s contribution

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has lauded Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s contribution to the club.

Levy was appointed chairman on March 9, 2001, meaning the Premier League’s longest-serving has now been at the helm for 20 years.

The 59-year-old has been a divisive figure among fans at times, but Redknapp pointed to his work in building the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Hotspur Way training ground as proof of his influence.

“Daniel has done an amazing job there,” he told talkSPORT. “He runs the club, he’s hands on, he’s there every day. Look where the club is, look at the fantastic facilities they’ve got now as a football club. Look where they are. Look at the playing squad.

“They’ve got an amazing playing squad there, a squad that they’ll be disappointed if they don’t make the top four this year. With that squad they certainly should.

“They’ve got a chance to win a cup this year, so what he’s done over the 20-year tenure has been fantastic really. Let’s hope he gets another 20 years.”
