Tottenham evening headlines as Spurs plot January Rudiger transfer and Bale help with Rodon move

Here are your Tottenham evening headlines for Sunday, October 11.

A January move for Germany star

After failing to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur could reignite reported interest in Germany international and Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in the January transfer window.

That is according to Kevin Phillips, who believes a January move across London makes sense for Rudiger.

He told Football Insider : “They have made some fantastic signings this summer but I think Mourinho will dive into the market in January so the Rudiger deal could happen then.”

That suggestion was corroborated by Germany manager Joachim Low.

“He tried everything to leave Chelsea because the European Championship is very important to him,” Low added.

“I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter.”

Bale can help with Rodon pursuit

While the international transfer window shut this week, clubs can still sign domestic players until October 16. And with Spurs’ failure to add a centre-back, one potential target is Swansea City’s Joe Rodon.

The 22-year-old is viewed as one of the top young prospects in the Championship. He is a Wales international and has been tipped to compete at the Premier League level. And, according to the Daily Star , Gareth Bale could play a key role in Spurs’ attempts to sign him.

Spurs, per the report, are “firm favourites” to sign Rodon in an £18million deal thanks to the influence of Welsh internationals Bale and left-back Ben Davies.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will make a move for Rodon, but his performances have reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United and West Ham throughout the summer.

The new Premier League structure

In a controversial proposal, Manchester United and Liverpool have put forward plans that would implement the greatest structural change to the English league game since the inception of the Premier League.

Per the Telegraph , ‘The Big Picture’ would see voting reform, the Premier League drop from 20 to 18 teams, the scrapping of the League Cup and Community Shield, and other vast changes.

Most pertinently, the one-vote-per-club voting model would be scrapped. Instead, the nine longest-standing teams -- the big six, Southampton, Everton and West Ham -- would be handed greater power, with only six needing to vote in favour of any proposed change for the vote to be passed.

Moreover, only two teams would be guaranteed relegation with a third playing a play-off with a Championship club, while the Premier League would start later in the summer to include more friendlies and a summer Premier League tournament.

For the EFL, Premier League clubs would provide a £250m one-off payment to help during the coronavirus. They would also give £100m to the FA and share 25% of their annual revenues with the EFL.
