Tottenham evening headlines as Samuel Umtiti to make transfer decision, Jan Vertonghen latest

Here are the Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Friday, May 22.

Vertonghen contract doubt continues

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has yet to agree an extension to his contract beyond June 30 – and is increasingly likely to leave the club, according to ESPN.

Although FIFA has granted clubs the opportunity to extend contracts until whenever the domestic season is completed, the Belgian international, who joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012, has not committed himself beyond the end of next month.

ESPN also reports that Vertonghen could be asked to sign a short-term deal with Spurs, despite the club rejecting his terms for a longer-term one.

Tottenham behind the scenes

A rumoured target for Inter Milan and Roma, the 33-year-old is said to be seeking a two-year deal with no change to his present £70,000-a-week salary.

Barcelona defender could choose Tottenham or Arsenal

Samuel Umtiti may face a straight choice between Tottenham and Arsenal after Inter Milan reportedly pulled out of the race to sign the Barcelona centre-half.

Italian publication Calciomercato claims that Inter are wary of his injury record, which has seen him miss more than 40 games over the course of the last two seasons.

Barcelona are keen to offload Umtiti and were hoping to use the French international as bait in their pursuit of Inter striker Lautaro Martinez.

But Inter’s reluctance may leave the door open for the two north London clubs, with the pair both linked with the 26-year-old.

Turkish reports claim Spurs 'to swoop' for Fenerbahce forward

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping to get his transfer business done early after submitting a bid for Fenerbahce striker Vedat Muriqi.

According to Turkish publication A Spor, Spurs have offered £4.5million for the Kosovan hitman, with the club being left shorthanded up front for large parts of this season after Harry Kane was injured on New Year’s Day.

Muriqi, who is also a reported target for Lazio and Napoli, signed for Fenerbahce from Caykur Rizespor last summer and has scored 15 goals in 28 appearances.

However, football.london understands the reports are wide of the mark and Spurs are not currently interested in the striker.
