Tottenham evening headlines as Juventus enter race for Milik and Levy knows Mourinho's demands

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Monday July 7.

Tottenham face Juventus-shaped stumbling block in pursuit of Napoli striker

Juventus have entered the race for Arkadiusz Milik, leaving Tottenham Hotspur with serious competition for the Polish striker’s signature.

Milik has one year remaining on his contract at Napoli, and Goal reports Juve see him as the ideal replacement for veteran frontman Gonzalo Higuain.

The 26-year-old has averaged a goal every 128 minutes for Napoli across Serie A and European football, but injuries have restricted him to just 86 league games for the club since joining in 2016.

Alasdair Gold Spurs Q&A after Mourinho's pre-Everton press conference

Goal reports that Milik is keen on a reunion with Juve boss Maurizio Sarri, the man who originally brought him to Italy from Ajax, but Spurs are not thought to be out of the race.

Mourinho reveals Daniel Levy “knows what I would like” when quizzed on transfers

Jose Mourinho has been given the funds to make some additions to his Tottenham squad, but the manager is believed to be keen on continuing to strengthen ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The biggest question mark concerns whether his desires are in sync with those of chairman Daniel Levy, and Mourinho remained relatively tight-lipped when asked about the current state of play.

"One thing is what I would like and of course Mr Levy knows what I would like, but I know the situation perfectly,” Mourinho said ahead of Spurs’ league meeting with Everton.

"That's why I say, 'I would like' and I don't say 'I want', because I have to respect the situation of the world and the situation of my club.

"So we have to be very cautious in our words. Of course we have to improve. When I say we want to improve, we have to improve generally. So let's see. Let's see what is possible."

In Mourinho’s first window, Spurs spent big on Steven Bergwijn and paid to make Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move permanent.

However, the manager is still believed to want a new defensive midfielder after losing Victor Wanyama in March.

Former Spurs keeper slams “the most absurd decision of the season” in Sheffield United reverse

Tottenham underwhelmed in their 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United, but former goalkeeper Paul Robinson is still railing at a contentious decision which arguably changed the course of the game.

Harry Kane looked to have equalised within a couple of minutes of Sander Berge’s opener, only for the goal to be chalked off when a VAR check ruled that Lucas Moura had handled in the build-up.

“I have seen some crazy decision [sic] from VAR, and we did not think it could get any stranger, but that is the most absurd decision I have ever seen,” Robinson told Football Insider .

“Referees have a hard job but they are not helping themselves with decisions like that. It is a terrible decision. It was not even handball. The most absurd decision of the season.”

Following the disallowed goal, substitute Lys Mousset doubled Sheffield United’s lead and Oli McBurnie added a third goal before Kane responded with a late consolation.

The result means Spurs go into their match with Everton knowing defeat would push them back into the bottom half of the table. However, three points against the Toffees would take Jose Mourinho’s side into eighth, above Sheffield United on goal difference.
