Tottenham evening headlines as Jose Mourinho issues Gareth Bale update, Graeme Souness' Son claim

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Tuesday, December 15.

'Son Heung-min would not make Liverpool starting XI'

Graeme Souness has said that Spurs' leading goalscorer Son Heung-min would not make Liverpool's starting 11 ahead of the table-toppers' clash on Wednesday night.

Only Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored more goals in the Premier League this season than Son, but Souness believes that the South Korean would not crack Liverpool's 11 because of Sadio Mane.

Writing in the Times, Souness said: "Liverpool are the real deal in every department and Spurs are still a long way off that.

"The only Spurs player who would get in Liverpool’s line-up is Kane, because Sadio Mane can do everything Son can, and will also go to war with you."

Joel Matip's availability

In his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that defender Joel Matip will face a late fitness race to be fit for Wednesday's contest with Spurs.

Liverpool have endured a defensive injury crisis with both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez set for extended spells on the sidelines. In their absence, Matip has been a regular starter, but he suffered back spasms in the weekend's draw with Fulham and was withdrawn at half-time as a result.

And Klopp now says that he will have to wait to see if Matip is ready to feature once more.

"I don’t know yet. Only two days ago we played, he left the pitch with a back spasm," said Klopp in his pre-match press conference.

"The physios worked pretty much 24 hours on him, so we will see. Today we have another session and then we will see."

Jose Mourinho provides Gareth Bale update

Jose Mourinho has revealed that Gareth Bale may not be fit enough to feature against Liverpool after the Welshman missed Sunday's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

After the draw, Mourinho believed that Bale would be ready to make his return. But in his pre-match press conference, he expressed his reservation about the 31-year-old's availability.

"We still have training session this afternoon. Yesterday he didn't train with the team. He trained inside, not even outside," explained Mourinho.

"In this moment, I'd say not but let's wait for the feelings and let's see the training session."
