Here are the Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines on Monday 7 September:
Eighties theme to new third kit
Tottenham Hotspur revealed their brand-new third kit today, complete with a centrally-positioned club crest and a solid yellow colour scheme.
The kit is in homage to the club’s successful period in the early-1980s in which they won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup. It has been largely well-received by various corners of the Spurs fanbase, but as with any kit launch there have been some mixed views.
Some feel the base colour is overbearing while others were fans of the bright, garish yellow harking back to successful days of yesteryear.
In contrast, Chelsea’s own third kit launch today – also produced by Nike – did not go down well with the club’s support. Many felt the blue and red stripes were an error of judgement.
Mourinho drawing on Portuguese links to bolster squad
Spurs manager José Mourinho has been scouring his native Portugal for Tottenham Hotspur’s latest signing, according to football.london.
It is understood the club are interested in signing SL Benfica defender Tomas Tavares, a 19-year-old full-back who broke into the Lisbon-based club’s first-team last season.
Moving for Tavares would not be the first piece of business Mourinho has done with Benfica since becoming Spurs boss. In January, Spurs agreed an 18-month loan deal for defensive midfielder Gedson Fernandes.
Utilising his links at Portuguese clubs seems to have paid dividends for Mourinho in the past, particularly when it comes to acquiring players. At Manchester United he was able to tempt Victor Lindelöf and Diogo Dalot to trade sunnier climbs at Benfica and Porto respectively for the North West of England.
England boss in praise for Kane
Spurs striker Harry Kane has been lauded by England national team manager Gareth Southgate for his professionalism and all-round quality.
"Harry is a supreme goalscorer and he is critical to the way we play,” Southgate is quoted as saying in an interview with the Evening Standard .
It comes in the wake of England’s 1-0 victory over Iceland in the UEFA Nations League, a game in which Kane saw a first-half goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Had the goal stood, the Spurs frontman would have become the first Englishman to score in seven consecutive post-War internationals.
Up next for England is a tie with Denmark in Copenhagen. It is unclear whether Kane will be fit to start, but Southgate remains confident whenever he is in the squad.
"[Harry's fitness] will be an important decision. Energy will be key,” the manager added.
