Tottenham evening headlines as Joe Lewis' wealth drops and Vertonghen linked with Inter transfer

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Sunday, May 17.

Jan the man for Inter Milan

Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen is reportedly wanted by Inter Milan, with manager Antonio Conte believing him to be the perfect fit for his tactical system.

Vertonghen is out of contract at the end of the season, but has kept the door open to remaining in north London.

However, according to Italian publication Tuttosport , Conte would like the Belgian defender as he has experience of playing in a three-man backline.

Tottenham behind the scenes

The report adds that Vertonghen is a target for clubs across Europe, including Roma and Atletico Madrid, as well as his former side Ajax.

Could have been different for Crouchy

Former Spurs striker Peter Crouch may not have returned to the club from Portsmouth in July 2009 had manager Harry Redknapp not intervened.

Crouch, who began his career at Spurs, told the Daily Mail that he was on the verge of signing for Sunderland, with boss Steve Bruce showing him around the club’s training ground.

He was prepared to choose Sunderland over Fulham, until Redknapp, who had also signed Crouch for Pompey, phoned him.

"On the way back home, though, I got a call from Harry Redknapp, who asked me about my plans," Crouch said. “When I told him about Sunderland, he made his pitch for Tottenham and having not even been in the picture, I was suddenly headed for White Hart Lane. I’m glad it worked out as it did.”

He stayed at Spurs for two seasons before moving to Stoke City ahead of the 2011/2012 season.

Crouch retired, aged 38, last year, having taken in a short spell at Burnley.

Billionaire Lewis’ wealth drops

Tottenham owner Joe Lewis’ personal wealth has dropped, football.london reports.

According to the latest figures from Forbes, the 83-year-old was listed as the 427th richest man in the world, with a personal fortune of $4.7billion (£3.9billion).

But that is down on last year’s figure, which was placed at $5billion (£4.1billion).

Bahamas-based Lewis had faced criticism after Spurs made the decision to reduce all non-playing employees’ wages by 20 per cent as football’s income was switched off during the sport’s shutdown.

They initially planned to use the government’s furlough scheme, but the club later made a U-turn.
