Tottenham evening headlines as Harry Kane exit is teased and search for John McDermott successor

Here are the latest headlines for Tottenham on Thursday, May 28.

Darren Bent tips France international as a “great signing”

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has tipped Borussia Monchengladbach forward Alassane Plea to be a success were the club to sign him.

Bent scored 25 goals across two seasons for Spurs, and believes Plea would have to settle a secondary role behind Harry Kane if he left the Bundesliga for North London this summer.

German outlet Bild have reported Spurs’ interest in the 27-year-old, who was capped by France in 2018. He’s registered nine goals and assists in the Bundesliga this season.

"He’d be a great signing, someone who knows the intensity it takes to make it in one of those top leagues but again, if you’re a centre-forward and you’re going to Spurs, you’ve got to be prepared to play backup for a little bit longer,” Bent told Football Insider.

"Harry Kane’s there, he’s still young enough so you know you’re not going to go there and play straight away.

"For his development, it might be good to play with someone like Harry Kane but if you’re playing well at the club you’re at at the minute, why would you go and sacrifice that to sit on someone’s bench?"

The latest in the search for the next Tottenham academy head

Our Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has all the details about Tottenham’s search for a new Head of Academy Coaching and Player Development.

John McDermott, who was formerly in charge, has now left the club ahead of starting a new role with the FA next month. He’d worked at the club for 15 years.

The final months of his tenure hadn’t gone as planned after all the curtailment of academy campaigns across the country, but he’s been working behind the scenes to help ensure a smooth handover to a yet-to-be-decided successor.

Redknapp suggests Kane could leave Spurs in search of silverware

Harry Kane could look to leave Tottenham Hotspur unless they start competing for trophies, according to Harry Redknapp.

The 73-year-old, who spent almost four seasons as Spurs boss between 2008 and 2012, suggested the club has gone backwards since challenging Leicester and Chelsea for the Premier League title.

Kane has twice finished as the Premier League’s top scorer, as well as winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, but he’s yet to win a trophy with club or country.

"I suppose it’s always a possibility,” Redknapp told talkSPORT Breakfast, when asked whether the 26-year-old could leave his boyhood club.

"I’d like to see him stay, but they’d need to win something. It’s been a long time and you can only see them winning a cup competition.

"I really can’t see them challenging at the moment now for the Premier League, they’re not as good as they were two or three years ago, for sure."
