Tottenham evening headlines as Emerson negotiations begin and candidates to replace Vertonghen

Here are the Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines on Saturday August 8.

Spurs enter negotiations for Emerson

Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry about Barcelona defender Emerson, according to Diaro de Sevilla, via Football Transfer Tavern .

Emerson is currently on loan at fellow Spanish side Real Betis, halfway through his two-year loan at the club.

Spurs are keen to strengthen their right-back position, with the likes of Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters both linked with moves away from north London.

The report states that Spurs have already entered talks with Barca over the Brazilian defender, with Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan also interested.

Candidates for the #5 shirt

Jan Vertonghen has now left Tottenham, meaning the No.5 shirt is now available for the first time in eight years.

Who could become Spurs’ new number five ahead of the new 2020/21 season? Rob Guest of football.london takes a look.

Kim Min-Jae, who has been linked with Spurs in recent weeks, is a definite contender, but as are two current Tottenham players.

Eric Dier, who wears the No.15 shirt, has just signed a new deal with Spurs, but Jose Mourinho could opt with the younger of the pair - Japhet Tanganga - who broke into the first team last season.

King masterclass from Spurs

When Mourinho was appointed as Spurs boss last year, he quickly struck up a bond with the former Tottenham captain Ledley King.

Earlier this week, King was appointed as Spurs’ new first-team assistant, and as Alasdair Gold writes , this is a PR masterclass from the north London side.

It appears that the aforementioned bond has led to King’s appointment, but also with the Spurs legend proving his worth off the pitch after such an impressive career on the field.

Since retiring from professional football in 2012 after an injury-plagued career, the ex-Spurs man has taken time to focus on the coaching aspect, working with the club’s academy, and earning this promotion.
