Tottenham evening headlines as Daniel Levy may rue failed transfer and big Eric Dier claim made

Here are your evening headlines for Saturday, November 14.

Eric Dier playing the best football of his career says former Chelsea forward

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes that Eric Dier is playing the best football of his career under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham this season.

The 26-year-old has been moved into defence by the Portuguese coach, and helped maintain a strong defensive record alongside Toby Alderweireld.

"Jose Mourinho has always liked him, he talks about when he first joined the club the players we wanted to sign and it is clear Eric Dier is one of them,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

"He really lost his way at Tottenham. The fans couldn't quite work out what most of us in the media would talk about, is he a centre- half or is he a midfielder?

"I think that debate has now ended because of his performances at centre-half because Jose has decided to play him in that position alongside [Toby] Alderweireld.

"For me, his performances have said everything about him this year. He is playing the best football I have seen him play at Tottenham."

Daniel Levy made to rue transfer error

The performances of Jack Grealish at Aston Villa this season will make Daniel Levy regret his refusal to sanction a £40million transfer for the player.

The Villa academy graduate was consistently their standout player during their three-year stint in the Championship, which often saw him linked with moves to Premier League clubs.

Tottenham were said to be interested in the summer of 2018, but Levy reportedly baulked at the £40m asking price - which is a fraction of what it would be today.

Since playing a starring role in Villa’s promotion-winning campaign, he’s comfortably made the step-up to the Premier League and has been outstanding this season, registering four goals and five assists from seven appearances.

With such output, he looks a natural successor to Christian Eriksen in the playmaker role at Spurs - but now a regular England international, his asking price is considerably more than the £40m it was two years ago.

Harry Kane backed to become England’s all-time top scorer

England manager Gareth Southgate believes Harry Kane has what it takes to overtake Wayne Rooney as the Three Lions’ all-time top scorer.

“In terms of what is possible, the goalscoring record is the really interesting one because his strike rate for us is phenomenal and he has time on his side to chase Wayne Rooney's record which would be a remarkable feat,” he told reporters (via the Daily Mail).

“I know from his perspective, while the personal achievement is something he is driven towards, it is the team achievement.

“He is so focused on the team having success and he would want to look back over the next few years at the team achieving.”

Kane, 27, still has plenty of time to score the 22 goals required to top the list.

The Tottenham striker has scored 32 goals from 59 international appearances, which puts him sixth in the country’s all-time goalscorers list behind Wayne Rooney, Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves and Michael Owen.
