Tottenham evening headlines as Bergwijn makes van de Beek admission, Redknapp wants Bale return

Good evening, Tottenham fans. Here are your evening headlines for Sunday, September 6.

Bergwiijn tried to convince van de Beek to join Spurs

Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn tried to persuade Donny van de Beek to join the club before his move to Manchester United.

The Dutch midfielder, who made the switch to Old Trafford last week, was on the radar of several other top clubs in Europe having caught the eye at Ajax.

And Bergwijn clearly hoped to sway his compatriot, contacting the 23-year-old before it was confirmed that he would sign for United.

“Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs,” van de Beek admitted in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad - via the Evening Standard.

“But I chose United."

Redknapp urges Spurs to re-sign Bale

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has claimed that signing Gareth Bale would turn the club into Premier League title contenders.

The Real Madrid winger has fallen out of favour in the Spanish capital and his future is in doubt.

There have been no concrete reports of a potential return to Spurs, but Redknapp believes the club should take advantage of his potential availability.

“Of the possible destinations, if Bale went back to Tottenham to team up with an already good frontline you could see Spurs do some real damage,” he wrote in a column for the Sun.

“Bale could change Tottenham from European contenders to Premier League title challengers. He would give everyone a lift.

“Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Bale. If it were my call, I’d throw the four of them on together and step back to watch lift-off.

“And when I think of Dele playing the supporting role behind those three it makes my skin tingle.”

He added: “Spurs need reinvigorating — and Bale would do just that.”

Mourinho and Spurs dangerous ahead of Premier League opener

Spurs appear to be in good shape ahead of the new season despite suggestions from outside the club that they need to make more signings.

Tottenham haven't spent big money in the transfer window, but Jose Mourinho is understood to confident that his squad is more than capable of success this term.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty might have been brought in for just £16.4million in total - if you factor in the fee Kyle Walker-Peters cost Southampton - and the emphasis at Spurs has been identifying affordable players who can take the team forward.

Plenty will have already written Tottenham off, but Mourinho and his players will no doubt relish the opportunity of proving them wrong.

And that will make Spurs a dangerous proposition ahead of their opening Premier League game against Everton.
