Here are your Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Tuesday, December 1.
Alphonso Davies on Gareth Bale comparison
Alphonso Davies has said that he does not compare himself to Spurs star Gareth Bale after he has been likened to the Welshman thanks to his meteoric rise at Bayern Munich this year.
Davies, like Bale, is an offensive-minded left-back who can also play on the wing. Bale elevated his game to an elite level when Harry Redknapp pushed him further up the pitch, while Davies’ offensive skills from left-back played a key part in Bayern’s treble-winning campaign.
The Canadian international, though, says that he will not compare himself to Bale, no matter how “fantastic” he thinks the 31-year-old is.
“Gareth Bale is an absolutely fantastic player who has achieved so much and won many trophies,” he told World Soccer .
“I don’t compare, though – if the coach asks me to play at left-back that’s where I play, and if he asks me to play on the left-wing that’s where I play.”
Mourinho tactics confused Chelsea full-backs
Jose Mourinho’s tactics confused Chelsea full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell on Sunday afternoon, according to Gary Neville, who was commenting on the game for Sky Sports.
James and Chilwell have been integral to Chelsea’s recent prosperous run, but Mourinho played them cleverly on Sunday as his Spurs side defended stoutly to earn a 0-0 draw.
On commentary, Neville highlighted James and Chilwell’s confusion. “It's like they haven't got an idea when it goes to the right and left backs,” he said during the game.
“Reece James there, you see him holding his arms out, it's like they didn't know Tottenham were going to be compact and deep and together.”
Tottenham earmark defensive target
Despite signing Joe Rodon in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, Spurs have already earmarked their next defensive target, per recent reports.
According to 90min, Tottenham are scouring Europe for potential options at the centre-back position. In doing so, they have highlighted Sassuolo defender Gian Marco Ferrari, who fits Mourinho’s desire for a left-footed solution.
The 28-year-old has racked up 60 league appearances for Sassuolo and was called up for Italy in 2018, though he did not feature.
Daniel Levy is said to be ready to sanction a deal for a defender, though will not spend more than £15million, which is said to be sufficient to sign Ferrari.
Sassuolo are currently third in Serie A after nine games, five points off the top of the table. Ferrari has played in every single game, 12 goals in the process.
