Tottenham evening headlines as £13.5m Southampton star targeted and Son Heung-min injury update

Here are your Tottenham evening headlines for Tuesday, March 16.

Spurs eye Southampton star

Tottenham are said to be interested in Southampton defender Jannick Vestergaard ahead of this season.

Jose Mourinho is expected to strengthen his defence this summer and Vestergaard might just fit the bill, possibly becoming available this summer, according to the Mirror.

Vestergaard will have just one year remaining on his contract from this summer, and that could lead Southampton to sell him, if they cannot get a new contract locked up, in a bid to avoid losing him for free the following year.

The 29-year-old is valued at £13.5million by Transfermarkt and he has been with the Saints since 2018 when he joined from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Spurs signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton for £15million last summer, and they could be about to raid the South Coast again.

Son injury update

Son Heung-min 's injury is not as bad as first feared, football.london understands.

Starting in Sunday's north London derby, the Tottenham attacker was on the pitch for only 19 minutes after appearing to sustain a hamstring injury.

Running behind the Arsenal defence and looking to get on the end of a long ball over the top, Son pulled up and immediately went to ground.

That proved to be the end of his afternoon, with Erik Lamela the man to come on and replace him in the 2-1 defeat.

Amid fears over the severity of the issue and the length of time he would be facing on the sidelines, football.london understands that the player could be back for the away trip to Newcastle United in Tottenham's first game after the international break.

It is also understood that he could potentially be back even quicker and in time for Sunday's away trip to Aston Villa.

Gazzaniga's loan nightmare

Tottenham haven't enjoyed the best of luck when it has come to the loan market over the past two seasons.

In terms of incomings, Gedson Fernandes' move to the club from Benfica in January 2020 didn't turn out as planned and his deal was cut short so that he could seal a switch to Galatasaray at the start of February.

Clearly one to forget as he just didn't have any impact on Jose Mourinho's team in his 14 appearances for the Lilywhites, Spurs have also endured a number of woes in terms of players heading out of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan.

Last season Jack Clarke barely featured in separate spells at both Leeds United and QPR, with Kazaiah Sterling restricted to only four games for Doncaster Rovers due to injury.

Having a number of hits and misses in the market once again this campaign, one player who is really struggling for match action at present is Paulo Gazzaniga.

Dropping down the pecking order at Tottenham ahead of the 2020/21 season due to Joe Hart's arrival on a free transfer, the Argentine was allowed to depart at the turn of the year for regular first-team football elsewhere.

However, that has just not happened at all since linking up with La Liga side Elche.

A substitute in only two of Tottenham's games this season due to the goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order, Gazzaniga has been permanently glued to the bench in his short time in Spain with head coach Fran Escriba keeping faith with Edgar Badia.

Given Elche's early exit from the Copa del Rey prior to Gazzaniga's move to the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero, there just appears to be no sign of a way into the XI unless Badia picks up an injury or Escriba decides to change his team up in hope of helping them stay in the division.
