Tottenham enter Dominik Szoboszlai transfer race after Arsenal told when he can complete move

Tottenham Hotspur have joined north London rivals Arsenal in the race to sign highly-rated Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai from Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg.

That is according to a report by 90Min, who claim Spurs are interested in landing the attacking starlet.

As first revealed by football.london back in the summer of 2019, Arsenal have been keen on adding Szoboszlai to their ranks, with the club having been desperately in need of bolstering their attacking-midfield options.

Throughout this summer's transfer window, the Hungary international, who has scored five goals already this season for Salzburg, as well as registering nine assists, was closely linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, as Mikel Arteta looked to strengthen his midfield options.

Should Gareth Bale or Lucas Moura start against Man City?

However, no deal ever came to fruition, resulting in Arsenal signing Thomas Partey in a big-money deal from Atletico Madrid, although the Ghanaian international was signed in an effort to strengthen the defensive side of the club's midfield.

Despite that, Arsenal remain interested in Szoboszlai, just as they do with Lyon ace Houssem Aouar.

But the Gunners could be forced to primarily focus on Aouar instead of the 20-year-old, with Spurs having now joined the race for his signature.

It is reported that Tottenham, who resume their Premier League campaign at home to Manchester City on Saturday evening, are keen to sign Szoboszlai, just as the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are, proving just how big a talent the youngster is.

One advantage Tottenham may have over Arsenal in the race to sign the Hungarian is that he has a release clause of £22.5million, which, if Spurs are still in the running for the Premier League title come the January window, they may be tempted to part with to seal a deal.

Arsenal, on the other hand, could be forced to sell players to fund any potential new arrivals after spending big on Partey only last month.

Earlier this week, Jesse Marsch - the Red Bull Salzburg boss - hinted at the prospect of Szoboszlai being allowed to leave the club in January.

"Yes," Marsch told Futbol with Grant Wahl. "The reality is that a guy like Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to have many suitors this winter.

"He's an incredbile talent, and I say this: When you coach young players, you have to love them and love the fact that they're going to move on and love that they're going to have big opportunities to prove themselves and show how good they are.

"If you're only worried about how it affects your success, then you're not really going to ever be effective at coaching and leading young people.

"So with a guy like Dominik, I mean, I want him to show everybody in the world how good he is.

"So let's see what happens, but I would be surprised if he winds up staying past winter.

"We play with teenagers, and of course when they do well a lot of clubs get really excited."

As well as that, Szoboszlai's agent - Matyas Esterhazy - recently claimed that his client currently has no agreement in place to join any club in January, even though there was reports that he was very close to signing for AC Milan.

"Dominik Szoboszlai has no agreement with Leipzig or any other club, except of course his current club Red Bull Salzburg," he told Hungarian outlet Index.

Whoever does eventually win the race for the 20-year-old will be inheriting a star with massive potential.

Since the start of last season, the midfield architect has scored 17 goals and registered 27 assists in just 53 games.
