Tottenham end pre-season campaign with defeat to Watford with Andre Gray and Domingo Quina on target for hosts

Tottenham finished their pre-season with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to recently-relegated Championship side Watford.

With just eight days until Jose Mourinho begins his first full campaign at Tottenham at home to Everton, goals from Andre Gray and Domingo Quina gave Watford a half-time lead, with a late Heung-min Son penalty not enough to avoid a first pre-season defeat.

Despite a number of key players absent on international duty, Mourinho opted for a largely experienced side, notably including Tanguy Ndombele, who played his first minutes of pre-season.

With Hugo Lloris away with the France squad, Joe Hart was preferred to Paulo Gazzaniga in the starting line-up, with youngsters Denis Cirkin and Harvey White also featuring alongside the attacking quartet of Dele Alli, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son.

After a tightly-contested opening, it was the home side who took the lead as Quina was allowed to venture forward before sending a thumping 30-yard strike past a diving Hart, who arguably should have done better.

Tottenham found themselves two down before half-time as Gray converted from the spot after youngster Cirkin brought down Tom Dele-Bashiru in the box.

Ndombele was brought off at half-time after a largely quiet first 45 minutes of pre-season football, joined by Hart and Cirkin as Mourinho brought on Gazzaniga, Jack Clarke and Juan Foyth.

It was Watford who started the second-half on the front foot, but Tottenham gave themselves hope with 10 minutes remaining as Son burried a penalty after Lamela was brought down.

Tottenham will welcome back a number of key players ahead of their clash with Everton, including Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld as well as new signings Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty.

First-half XI: Hart, Aurier, Sanchez, Carter-Vickers, Cirkin, White, Ndombele, Alli, Lamela, Lucas, Son

Second-half XI: Gazzaniga, Aurier, Sanchez, Carter-Vickers, Foyth, White, Alli, Clarke, Lamela, Lucas, Son
