Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld on uncertain future: 'I don't look further than this season'

Toby Alderweireld's Tottenham future remains subject to question after the Belgian defender insisted that he was not thinking beyond the end of the current campaign.

Spurs triggered a one-year extension in Alderweireld's contract back in January, but in doing so activated a clause allowing him to leave for £25million in the summer.

Manchester United have persistently been linked with a potential move for the versatile 30-year-old, though Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly remains their priority defensive target.

Addressing further questions over his future while away on international duty with Belgium, Alderweireld told Sky Sports. "There's a lot to play for this season and then I have a year contract left at Spurs [until 2020].

"I don't look further than this season and what other things yeah, I don't know.

"I'm very happy at Spurs, so we will see what the future brings."

Pressed on if the next move was a big one for him aged 30, he added: "Yeah, but I still feel very fit. I think I played a lot of minutes this season, so I showed I'm fit. I don't feel 30, I feel younger.

"I'm very happy and like I said I try just to watch game-by-game and this season there is a lot to play for so I will give my best for that."

Alderweireld has made 147 appearances for third-place Tottenham since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015, including 27 in the Premier League this term.

He missed much of the 2017-18 season with a serious hamstring injury.
