Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld delivers verdict on Premier League coronavirus suspension

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has had his say on the Premier League's suspension of all matches until April 4 due to the coronavirus.

The English divisions finally followed suit with other European leagues on Friday morning in closing down the Premier League, Women's Super League and EFL divisions until next month at least.

The Premier League had originally stated that this weekend's matches would go ahead only for the news to emerge soon after, first that Arsenal manager Mikel Arterta has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Then came the news that Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi had also, meaning both club's squads needed to enter self-isolation.

It was announced on Friday that Everton and Bournemouth both had to take similar measures and the Premier League were left with no choice but to suspend the competition.

Alderweireld made it clear on Twitter that it was the right decision to take.

"The well-being of fans, players, staff and everyone must come first during this situation," he said. "Please respect and follow the measures taken to try to turn this around as soon as possible.

"My thoughts go out to those already affected and I hope every can stay as safe and healthy as possible."

Tottenham's players trained at Hotspur Way on Friday as normal ahead of their then scheduled match against Manchester United which will now be played at a later date.
