Tottenham defender Juan Foyth told to make Leeds United transfer decision

Former Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion striker Kevin Phillips believes Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Juan Foyth should join Leeds United next season, should they be promoted, in an attempt to take his qualities to the next level.

The Argentinian defender, who joined Spurs from Estudiantes back in 2017, has struggled for minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, being restricted to a paltry seven appearances in all competitions.

However, the 22-year-old defender is still held in high-regard in North London, meaning a temporary move out on loan could be the perfect tonic he needs to try and take himself to the next level.

And one club that could be the ideal destination for Foyth to take his game to the next level would be Leeds, with the Whites knocking on the door of the Premier League.

With nine Championship fixtures remaining, Leeds, who dropped out of the Premier League back in 2004, are one point clear at the top of the table, meaning they will be aiming to get the job done once the Championship season is granted permission to resume.

Should Leeds return to the Premier League, head coach Marcelo Bielsa will be desperate to bolster an array of positions in his squad, particularly at centre-back, with on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White, who has excelled in the Championship this term, almost certain to be either retained by the Seagulls or sold to one of the Premier League's elite for a hefty transfer fee.

With that in mind, Phillips, who made a handful of apperances for England during his career, believes joining Leeds could be exactly what Foyth needs.

“I like Foyth. He has shown that he can play in the Premier League, it does not faze him," Phillips told Football Insider.

“If Ben White moves on then you are at least replacing him with Premier League experience.

“He is a good player but there is question marks over whether he is the same calibre as Ben White.

“A run of games would certainly benefit him. It has been a while since he has played regularly but I like the qualities he possesses.

“I could definitely see that one happening.”
