Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen 'hopeful' of playing in Champions League Final ahead of ankle scan

Jan Vertonghen could find out on Friday if he will be fit for the Champions League Final on June 1 after playing the whole second half of Tottenham's win over Ajax with an ankle injury.

Vertonghen left the Johan Cruyff ArenA on crutches and wearing a protective boot on his right foot after suffering the problem in the first half of Spurs' unforgettable 3-2 win.

The 32-year-old, who also played in a protective mask after suffering a gashed nose in the first leg, is set for a scan today, which should determine the extent of the problem.

"My ankle is swollen," he told Belgian TV. "I played the second half on adrenaline. I couldn’t put weight on my foot after the game.

"I have a scan tomorrow and then I know more. It was not because of the celebrations.

"I am hopeful, [the final] is three weeks away."

The centre-half played the full 90 minutes at his former club, as Spurs recovered from 2-0 down at half-time to win through Lucas Moura's hat-trick, setting-up an all-English final against Liverpool in Madrid.

He will definitely miss Sunday's Premier League season-finale at home to Everton.
