Tottenham dealt major blow as key player ruled out of vital RB Leipzig Champions League tie

Jose Mourinho has been dealt even more bad news ahead of Tottenham's crucial Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

Losing 1-0 against the Bundesliga side three weeks ago, the Lilywhites have it all to do as they look to advance to the final eight of the competition.

Steven Bergwijn did play in the first leg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but he will play no part out in Germany.

The January signed played the full 90 minutes in Saturday's draw against Burnley and appeared to be limping when he made his way to the tunnel at the full-time whistle.

Bergwijn has sustained a "significant sprain" to his left ankle and he will now joins the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Moussa Sissoko on the sidelines.

A statement on Spurs' official website read: "Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley.

"The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed."

football.london asked Mourinho about Bergwijn's injury after the draw at Turf Moor and he opened up on why he had to go against his initial plan in Lancashire.

"The plan was for Steven to play 55-60 minutes and then Lucas to come," he explained. "The plan was to keep the fresh players on the pitch for 90 minutes, but I had to change that at half-time immediately.

"Steven had to play for 90 minutes, so on top of that he’s injured.

"Let’s see if it’s something minor and if he can make the effort because Tuesday I only want two options: we win or we lose but we leave everything there.

"We go with everything. The group is very strong and the group is very united. We go with everything. Tired not tired, injured not injured. We go there Tuesday with everything."
