Tottenham dealt fresh blow in new manager search as Erik ten Hag makes Ajax contract decision

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their search for a new manager after Erik ten Hag penned a new contract at Ajax.

Following the decision to part with Jose Mourinho just over a week ago, Spurs have been linked with a number of managers in regards to the vacant hotseat.

RB Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann was the previous favourite, but has since signed a deal to become Bayern Munich's head coach from the summer, with Brendan Rodgers keen to remain at Leicester City and build on the good work that has taken place at the King Power Stadium since his arrival in 2019.

With ten Hag seeing his odds to become the next Spurs boss slashed in recent days, Ajax announced on Friday morning that he will now remain at the club after extending his contract by a further year.

As his previous deal was set to expire at the end of June 2022, the Dutchman's new deal runs until June 2023.

It now means that Tottenham are going to have to look elsewhere for a new manager as they look to appoint someone in place of Mourinho.

football.london understands that the club want to announce their next manager by the end of the season, thus giving them three weeks to appoint someone as Spurs bring the curtain down on the 2020/21 season on Sunday, May 23 when they travel to Leicester.

Given the amount of names linked with the job, the club are believed to be on the lookout for a manager who is progressive, attack-minded, favours possession-based football and fits into the club's culture.

Brighton manager Graham Potter and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez are two others who have been in the headlines regarding taking over from Mourinho, with Ralf Rangnick and Massimiliano Allegri also linked as they are both currently out of work.

Links with Maurizio Sarri, Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo and Atletico Bilbao's Marcelino are believed to be wide of the mark at this point, while other rumoured candidates such as England boss Gareth Southgate and ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe are not currently expected to be in the frame.
