Tottenham: Cristian Romero drops huge hint amid doubts over future and Ange Postecoglou transfer demand

Staying put? Cristian Romero - (Getty Images)

Cristian Romero has dropped the biggest hint regarding his future at Tottenham.

The Argentine central defender has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid after admitting he would one day like to play in Spain.

Romero, who has two years left on his contract with Spurs, declared last month that his goal is to “always to grow and go to new places to continue developing” when quizzed about his future.

However, following Tottenham’s Europa League final win over Manchester United which ended their 17-year trophy drought as well as qualifying for the Champions League, it would appear Romero is keen to stay put.

In a post on social media, he wrote: “We achieved what we wanted this season as a group, and that's what matters.

“And….My name is part of the history of this beautiful club

“I want to thank you all for the love and support every day despite everything, but I have no doubt that staying together led us to success.

“We must continue, this is the path.”

This message will be music to the ears of Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou after he stressed the importance of the club keeping hold of the World Cup winner.

He said: "Romero is absolutely important to keep at this football club.

"You just saw the way he’s been in the last [weeks] and he hasn’t been fully fit to be fair with his toe, but you’ve seen he’s a World Cup winner. He is a winner.

"You saw that in all the big games we’ve had and the lads certainly respect him very highly. He makes them walk a bit taller, so from my perspective it is a no-brainer that making sure players like him [stay], because if he goes, who do you replace him with?

"There is not too many out there like him. It will be very important for the club to try and retain him, and retain him for the longer-term, I think."
