Tottenham contract u-turn as Jose Mourinho sent Harry Kane transfer message

Tottenham star set to stay after contract u-turn

Eric Dier could be set to stay at Tottenham with the club reportedly ready to open talks on a new deal with the player.

According to Football Insider, the club had been prepared to listen to offers for the England international but have now decided to extend Dier’s current deal, which runs until 2021.

The 26-year-old has struggled for form and fitness this season, and looked to have fallen out of favour under new boss Jose Mourinho.

However, Mourinho is said to be keen on converting midfielder Dier into a central defender as he tries to find a place for him in the side.

Alasdair Gold on who Spurs could sell

Mourinho has to convince Kane

Jose Mourinho’s primary task at Tottenham is to convince star man Harry Kane to stay put in north London, according to Alasdair Gold.

The striker has been candid about his ambitions and openly admitted his future at Spurs is dependent on the direction the club is heading in.

"I love Spurs, I'll always love Spurs.” Kane told Sky Sports “But it's one of those things - I've always said if I don't feel we're progressing as a team or going in the right direction, then I'm not someone to just stay there for the sake of it.”

Mourinho, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the Tottenham dugout earlier this season, has a proven track record of success in England and abroad.

Crucially, sooner rather than later, he must show Kane that he can and will replicate that success at his new club.

Spurs’ Champions League hopes dealt a blow by UEFA

Spurs could miss out on Champions League qualification next season following the latest UEFA statement on the conclusion of the football season.

With leagues across Europe currently suspended, UEFA has suggested the league positions and subsequent qualification for next season’s competitions be decided by ‘sporting merit’ if they cannot resume safely.

"UEFA urges National Associations and Leagues to explore all possible options to play all top domestic competitions giving access to UEFA club competitions to their natural conclusion.” the statement read.

“However, UEFA stresses that the health of players, spectators and all those involved in football as well as the public at large must remain the primary concern at this time.”

UEFA also confirmed that should the season not be concluded, individual National Associations would have to select clubs for the UEFA club competitions in the 2020/21 campaign based on sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic competitions.

Currently sat in 8th place in the Premier League, it’s unlikely Spurs would be considered for a Champions League place on that basis.
